“To learn the true meaning of skiing or snowboarding is to be able to live in the NOW. That feeling when your mind and ego are at peace while riding down that pristine slope, and you are totally in the present moment can have life changing repercussions for all aspects of your life. True realisation of ongoing enlightenment happens in the NOW and this is the hope we have for all our guests when they leave us at Japan Powder Culture Tours.” Jase (Owner)

Beginner Ski and Snowboard Tours, Designed for You.

Japan Powder Culture Tours offers a range of fully guided beginner ski and snowboard tours across the 18 interconnected resorts of Shiga Kogen. Depending on weather and snow conditions, there may also be opportunities to explore nearby resorts such as Madarao, Nozawa Onsen, and Togakushi.

We understand that learning a new sport can feel overwhelming-especially without the right guidance and support. While some choose to visit heavily Westernised resorts in Japan, these often involve large beginner groups and crowded slopes, which can increase the risk of injury and reduce the quality of the learning experience.

With JPC Tours, you’ll enjoy a more personal and authentic alternative. Our small-group lessons take place in quieter resorts where Western visitors are few, allowing for a more focused and enjoyable learning environment. Our English-speaking instructors are experienced, supportive, and passionate about helping you build skills and confidence-turning your introduction to snow sports into a lifelong love. Contact us today and we will take your next holiday from average to awesome!

Why Learn With Us?

While all ski schools offer qualified and passionate instructors (that’s the baseline you’d expect) Japan Powder Culture Tours goes beyond traditional instruction to focus on the often-overlooked, real-world elements that make a difference in your learning experience.

Over the years, we’ve discovered that some of the most critical aspects of learning to ski or snowboard aren’t found in the standard instructor’s manual. Here are just a few of the common sense approaches we use to accelerate our clients learning in a safe and enjoyable environment.

  • Equipment That Fits (Properly)
At most rental shops, you provide your foot size, height, and weight, and you're handed gear to figure out on your own. We go the extra mile. We carefully measure your foot, ensure your boots are correctly fitted (eliminating pressure points), adjust them to the appropriate tension, mount them on your skis, and double-check that your bindings are set to a safe level. This isn’t just about comfort, it’s about performance and safety.

  • Learning Starts Before the Slopes
Before you even hit the snow, we show you how to move confidently in your gear, walking on different surfaces and in various conditions. We also teach you the right way to carry your equipment to reduce strain and improve balance.

  • A Teaching Pace That Fits You
Everyone learns at a different pace, and we respect that. Faster learners are given additional challenges, but our focus is on helping the entire group progress together. Slower learners receive just as much attention, no one gets left behind.

  • A Smarter Teaching Method
The traditional model -explain, demonstrate, then lead from the front- doesn’t always allow instructors to correct mistakes effectively. Unless the instructor has eyes in the back of the head, how can they fix incorrect form? We prefer to teach from within the group, moving around to observe and provide one-on-one feedback. We reinforce key movements through repetition, helping you build lasting muscle memory.

  • We Give You the Whole Picture
Some ski schools teach in fragments, encouraging you to return for the next lesson to unlock the next piece. We believe in giving you the whole picture from the start. Our approach introduces the five core movements in skiing and snowboarding early on, allowing you to understand the full framework. From there, we break each movement down to help you progress from beginner to intermediate with clarity and purpose.

  • 6. Terrain Awareness
Finally, we teach you how to read the mountain, evaluating slope pitch, snow conditions, and terrain features-so you can make informed, safe decisions as you navigate your way downhill.
